COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY

Opera is created not only by performers on stage, but also by the communities that support and celebrate it. Wellington Opera is proud to work with local artists, audiences, and organisations to share the joy of opera across Wellington and Aotearoa.

Through community performances, collaborations, and behind-the-scenes experiences, we invite people of all ages to connect with the creative process and become part of the world of opera.

CHORUS

The Wellington Opera Chorus plays an essential role in many of our productions. Made up of talented singers from across the region, the chorus performs alongside leading opera artists and musicians. Chorus members contribute both musically and dramatically to each production, bringing energy and depth to the storytelling on stage. In selected productions we also include a children’s chorus, offering young singers the opportunity to perform as part of a professional opera production — for example in operas such as Tosca.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES & EVENTS

Wellington Opera regularly participates in community performances and public events throughout the city. These appearances help introduce new audiences to opera in relaxed and accessible settings. Our artists have performed at public festivals and cultural events, including CubaDupa, sharing music with thousands of visitors. We also present smaller concerts, pop-up performances, and special appearances as part of Wellington’s vibrant arts scene.

AOTEAROA STORIES

Wellington Opera is committed to celebrating stories from Aotearoa New Zealand and supporting local artists. Through collaborations and creative projects, we share stories connected to our country’s culture and history, often working with artists associated with Opera Aotearoa and other creative partners. These projects highlight the diversity of voices that contribute to opera in New Zealand today.
