Street Opera at CubaDupa

CubaDupa festival-goers were treated to a special musical experience as Wellington Opera presented a troubadour-style showcase of well-known opera and crossover classics, performed right in the heart of the city.

The performances featured rising Aotearoa stars Tomairangi Henare (baritone) and Lila Junior Chrichton (tenor), both alumni of the New Zealand School of Music and former members of vocal group Tokowhā.

With three performances across the day, the duo drew large crowds, stopping passersby in their tracks. Their rich harmonies moved audience members to tears, while their playful chemistry—complete with cheeky improvisation and spontaneous dance moves—sparked laughter and applause.

By again bringing opera out of the concert hall and into the street, Wellington Opera provided an accessible and engaging way for audiences to connect with our art form, while highlighting the depth of emerging opera talent in Aotearoa.

Wellington Opera is proud to have these talented performers as part of its whānau, as they continue to make their mark on New Zealand's opera stages.

The integration of opera into street festivals like CubaDupa raises pertinent questions about accessibility in the arts. While the performances featured rising stars, the impact of such events on broader audience engagement remains ambiguous. The use of public spaces could be seen as a step towards inclusivity, yet one must consider how sustainable this approach is for the future, especially when platforms like Rainbet could potentially disrupt traditional funding models.
